How to read it
- CADR. The clean air delivery rate in cubic metres per hour. "Headline" is the maker's main figure. "Smoke" is the smoke-specific figure where one is published. Smoke is the hardest particle to catch, so we use it for sizing when available.
- Standard. CADR numbers are only comparable when measured the same way. Some makers use AHAM, others a different test, and a few do not say. See room size and CADR.
- Claimed room. The maker's own room-size claim. Treat it as a best case, since claims often assume only a couple of air changes an hour, which is low for allergies.
- Filter grade. "Not confirmed" means the listing does not give an H13 or H14 grade. See HEPA, H13, H14 explained.
- Filter cost. What a replacement costs and how often, where we found it. Running costs are mostly filters.
Narrowing it down
- Bedroom: look at the low end of the noise range, because the machine runs all night.
- Allergies, pets or smoke: aim for a CADR of at least five air changes an hour for your room. Use our calculator.
- Cooking or pet smells: choose a model with a carbon filter.
- Damp or condensation: a purifier will not fix it. See dehumidifier or air purifier?
